Dutch web shops have been well accessible during the month of December. This is evident from research by Webshopuptimes.nl. The average accessibility in December was 99.84 percent, just slightly better than in the preceding months.
The large number of orders did not lead to significant overload. Among the largest web shops, only bol.com was unreachable a few times, while Wehkamp and Zalando experienced one or two minutes of downtime in the middle of the night. On average, a web shop had 4.3 outages in the month of December, ranging from one minute to several hours. For the study (results here), over thirteen hundred well-known and lesser-known web shops were monitored for accessibility every five minutes for almost a year. Messaging service WhatsApp announced yesterday that it sent eighteen billion messages on the night of December 31st. The previous daily record was from August (ten billion). The popularity of WhatsApp is also reflected in figures from Dutch telecom providers. The data traffic at KPN (such as via WhatsApp) showed almost a doubling compared to last year around the turn of the year, while the number of text messages halved. T-Mobile's data consumption grew by 78 percent compared to last year.
