Dutch people spend an average of three and a half hours a day surfing the internet from their computers; two hours from their smartphones and three hours from their tablets. This is evidenced by extensive research conducted on behalf of PayPal by IPSOS into the online purchasing behavior of the Dutch consumer.
Besides checking email, online shopping is now the online activity that connects all generations of Dutch people. 68% of respondents between 18 and 54 years old purchased something online in 2012. This shows that the growth in online shopping is still continuing.
The e-commerce market is expected to rise from nearly 10 billion to 13 billion euros in 2015. The largest growth will be in the online sale of food and drink, but consumers still need to make the shift to online grocery shopping: currently, transportation tickets such as plane tickets are the most common online purchase.
The m-commerce forecast shows significant growth: from 0.5 billion now to nearly €1.5 billion in 2015, with an increasingly strong growth observable each year. M-commerce is a growing subsector of e-commerce and includes purchases made via mobile or tablet. The tablet is generally found more pleasant for online purchases, as smartphones often have too small a screen size.
Almost one third of Dutch consumers engage in cross-border shopping. They visit foreign websites primarily for a broader or different selection of products and competitive pricing.
