Short answer: Hyvä makes Magento faster because it loads much less JavaScript than Luma. As a result, the loading time of the main content (LCP) and responsiveness to clicks (INP) improve in particular. Hyvä alone is no guarantee: hosting, images, and extensions matter just as much.
What are Core Web Vitals?
Core Web Vitals are three metrics that Google uses to measure how a page feels to a real visitor:
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): how quickly the largest visible content loads. Good is 2.5 seconds or faster.
INP (Interaction to Next Paint): how quickly the page responds to a click or tap. Good is 200 milliseconds or faster. INP replaced the old FID metric in March 2024.
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): how much the page shifts during loading. Good is 0.1 or lower.
Google uses these metrics as a signal in search results. More importantly: a slow webshop costs conversions, especially with B2B customers who want to reorder quickly.
Why does Luma often score poorly?
Luma loads a heap of JavaScript on every page via RequireJS, along with KnockoutJS and jQuery. The browser has to download and execute that before the page responds properly. On an average smartphone, that takes a long time. You see this reflected in a high INP and a slow LCP.
What does Hyvä do differently?
Less JavaScript. Hyvä uses Alpine.js, a lightweight library, and loads only what a page needs.
Only the CSS you use. Tailwind CSS builds a stylesheet with only the classes present in your theme.
Simpler templates. Fewer layers between the data and the HTML means the page renders faster.
What Hyvä doesn't solve for you
We regularly see Hyvä shops that are still slow. The cause almost always lies elsewhere:
Hosting. Without proper caching and sufficient capacity, the server remains the bottleneck. That's why we host on Corebox.
Images. Large, uncompressed product photos hurt your LCP on any theme.
Third-party scripts. Chat widgets, tag managers, and tracking pixels cost INP.
Extensions. A module with heavy custom JavaScript wipes out the gains made by Hyvä.
How do you measure it yourself?
Use PageSpeed Insights for a quick check per page. Pay attention to the field data from real visitors, not just the lab score. In Google Search Console, you can see under Core Web Vitals which groups of pages are below par.
